∑ Media have direct impact on the viewers
∑ Public receives information passively
∑ Media have immediate direct influence

2. Minimalist Effects Theory
∑ Media effects are mostly indirect
∑ Minimalist effects Theory includes:
- Two-step Flow Model
- Status Conferral (Agenda Setting)
- Narcoticizing Dysfunction

Two-steps Flow Model
-Viewers are influenced less by the mass media than by people they know personally and respect (opinion leaders).
-Personal contact is more important than media contact.

Status Conferral
-Media create prominence for issues and people by giving them coverage.
- Media sets agenda
- Media choose which topic or issues to emphasis
- Media do not tell people what to think but what to think about.

Narcoticizing Dysfunction
- People device themselves intro believing they are involved when actually they are only informed
- People are so overwhelmed by the volume of news and information available to them that they tend to withdraw from involvement in public issues.


3. Cumulative Theory
- Effects over time are profound
- Media influence gradually over time
- Minority views are intimidated into silence and obscurity.

Phenomena
- Mainstream Effect: heavy viewers tend to have more homogeneous opinion despite of their culture differences.
- Resonance Effect: Cultivation occurs especially when viewer’s everyday life experiences are congruent with those depicted in the television world.

North-south Flow Hypothesis
-News flowing from developed countries(north) to developing countries(south) is more in volume as compared to news flowing from south to north.
- In this way, events and news of the developed countries(US) have heavier influence on people.
